Because slavery, racism, suffering, and economic hardship are all related in the U.S. Systemic racism that still persists has been fundamental to poverty in America. Rejecting the legacy of slavery doesn’t make it go away, that’s kind of the whole point here. You have to acknowledge a problem first in order to solve it.
