George Orwell had similar thoughts. He depicted the rise of totalitarianism in the 19th/20th centuries as a response to growing equality. And that definitely included women's rights! Fascists were essentially ultra-conservatives who hated the social impact of modernity and industrial society.
Not only were class disparities becoming eroded - the very foundation of elite rule. The entire nature of the family was being challenged, the patriarchal, pastoral model was ceasing to make any sense. If there's one thing Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, Tojo, and other fascists feared and hated, it was liberated women!
