Dude, you just proved my point. The Hebron Massacre was in 1929, after the British issued the Balfour Declaration that stated that Mandatory Palestine was going to be a Jewish state. The difference being that this represented a change from what was an established pattern of coexistence.
And did you read the Wikipedia entry? Second paragraph: “Jews under Islamic rule were given the status of dhimmi, along with certain other pre-Islamic religious groups. These non-Muslim groups were nevertheless accorded certain rights and protections as "people of the book". During waves of persecution in Medieval Europe, many Jews found refuge in Muslim lands.”
As for population statistics, I have no idea which you are referring to because modern scholarship demonstrates otherwise:
